The Commissioner for Environment, Engr. Mike Eraye has charged Cross Riverians to cultivate positive attitudes towards tackling ecological challenges facing the State.

The Commissioner gave the charge during ecological sites inspection/audit by ecological fund office across the State.

He noted that ecological issues are not constant but dynamic while also reiterating His Excellency’s resolve to tackle environmental problems ravaging the State.

According to him, “where we saw gully erosions before has now witnessed some expansion, about 60 percent of the ecological challenges are man -made due to excavation of sand, latrite, and indiscriminate dumping of waste at the river bank”.

He lamented the high rate of gully erosion among other ecological problems that is fast springing in the state, stating that for this to be minimized people should desist from activities capable of degrading the environment such as improper disposal of waste.

Speaking further, Engr. Eraye called on residence to pay attention to environmental laws adding that before embarking on structural development, there is need to adhere to environmental and planning laws.

Also speaking, the Director, Flood and Erosion in the Ministry, Engr. Robert Etu said there is a deliberate effort by the State Government to divert some water from channel 2 to channel 1 link to qua river at Akpabuyo, disclosing that most often, houses in CRUTECH quarters are submerged when it rains.

He called on the quick intervention of ecological fund office to arrest the situation adding that the inspection will chart a way forward to address the challenges.
