Wife of the president, Federal Republic of Nigeria, Her Excellency, Mrs Aisha Buhari today flagged-off her pet project "project future assured" at Ikom Township Stadium, Cross River State.

Flagging off the program, Mrs Aisha Buhari commended the state Governor, Senator (Prof) Ben Ayade for his love and passion for health and well-being of Cross Riverians. She commended him for providing enabling environment for the maternal, newborn and child health week while lauding Dr (Mrs) Linda Ayade, wife of the Cross River State Governor for launching her foundation, Mediatrix Development Foundation and accepting to be maternal and child health ambassador for the state, noting that this signifies better things for mothers and children in CRS.

The first lady who was accompanied by wives of the Governors of Kogi, Plateau, Ebonyi, oyo and Akwa Ibom state maintained that Nigeria is one of the countries with the highest rate of maternal and infant mortality. She assured everyone that the federal Government is determined to bringing quality health care services closer to the people at the grassroot by establishing one primary healthcare in each political ward across the country.

Also speaking, the ambassador of maternal newborn and child health in CRS and the initiator of Mediatrix Development Foundation, H.E. Dr Linda Ayade thanked her husband, His Excellency Prof. Ben Ayade for establishing the Primary healthcare development agency which according to her will be a catalyst in fighting against maternal and child mortality at the grassroots, state and the country at large.

She noted that Nigeria is the second largest contributor to the under-five and maternal mortality rate in the world with an estimated 2,300 maternal deaths and 145 underfive deaths every single day in Nigeria  (UNICEF), while noting that CRS has a significant share to these alarming figures.

Stressing further, Dr (Mrs) Linda Ayade revealed that in CRS the skill birth attendant stands at 41% leaving 51% to gamble of unskilled birth attendants.

The State Commissioner of Health, Dr Inyang Asibong who also spoke at the flag-off said the state is committed to the training of health workers in basic midwifery skills via establishment of a viable health management system, the provision of drugs as well as monitoring and supervision of health facilities.

Earlier speaking, the Director General of Cross River State Primary Healthcare Development Agency (CRSPHCDA) and chief host of the event, Dr Betta Edu commended the wife of the President, Mrs Aisha Buhari for coming to honour CRS despite her busy schedule. She aknowledged the yearning of Cross Riverians and decided to bring her pet project tagged “Future Assured" to CRS.

In her words, "CRSPHCDA is among the very first in the country to have fully started the implementation of one functional primary healthcare center per ward, and the first to have the president’s wife commission it and flag off MNCHW. It will interest Your Excellencies to know that the state has completed the renovation and refurbishment of 3 PHC's centres, 2 in Ikom, and one in Obudu, while PHC's in  Aningeje, Akamkpa has work ongoing. I am happy to inform you of the readiness of CRS government led by Sen. Prof Ben Ayade to support the agency to better the lives of the poorest of the poor by making health care affordable and available even for the hard to reach rural communities in CRS.

The charismatic DG, called on the federal government to support the super highway project of his excellency, Senator (Prof) Ben Ayade, Governor of CRS. According to her this will enable health workers in the rural areas have seamless referrals to calabar and other Hospitals within the shortest time of 2 to 3 hours against the current 5 to 6 hours’ drive from Obudu to Calabar.

Highpoints of the flag-off was the commissioning of healthcare centres in Ikom were she met two mothers who delivered that same day at the facility and also named their children Aisha Manyo and Aisha Wisdom after the President's wife. Another high point was the launching of the Mediatrix Development Foundation, Presidents wife's project Future Assured and Immunizing of children by H.E Mrs. Aisha Muhammadu Buhari, Wife of the President, FRN and H.E. Dr. Mrs. Linda Ayade.
